Devin Gutierrez

Devin Gutierrez is a 23-year-old powerhouse singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, vocal coach, and disability rights activist based in Austin, Texas. He is on the Autism Spectrum and was born with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia which caused his blindness.

Music has always been Devin’s passion and lifeline. Born in Abilene and raised in Sweetwater, Texas, Devin’s first experience with the piano was at the age of 3 playing Jingle Bells on a Casio WTK483. At the time, his family thought he had pushed the demo song button on the keyboard, before they realized he was playing by ear.

After a few years of searching for a teacher who would instruct a blind student, he started piano lessons with Noreen Carson, a local classical pianist.
Over the proceeding years, Devin gained skills and popularity as a local performer; he received a gold medal on the Texas Music Teachers Association’s 9th grade music theory test (he was the first blind individual to successfully complete the test), he performed at football games, rodeos, talent contests, and many other local events.

Unfortunately, in 2012, Devin stopped making music for 4 years because of some discouraging comments uttered by a staff at his home school.

All that began to change when Devin came to the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in 2014. The school and fine arts activities confirmed to him that music was his true calling. While at the school, he was the lead in musical productions—as well the sound designer and music director, part of the choir, a member of the guitar ensemble, and a member (and now assistant director) of the school's  jazz band, The New Motown.
Devin cites Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Donny Hathaway, and Ray Charles among some of his influences. He has also found success as a vocal coach and producer with a project called The Spinrockers.

Devin is also an accomplished mixer and producer. He is well-versed in recording hardware and software and has worked with a variety of clients: The Texas School for the Blind theatre department, the legendary Blue Mist band, and his own sponsored project with the Music Moves Mountains Foundation.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Devin is a passionate activist for disability rights. He has worked as a website accessibility tester for county voting websites in the State of Texas and assisted the Autism Society of Texas to create a video to train employers on best accommodating for the needs of autistic individuals in the work place.

Devin lives and works in Austin, Texas.

Peripheral Vision is a collection of live performances from three different livestreams recorded in 2020 and 2021 at the East Austin Piano Shop by Collin Shook. The shows were produced and organized by the Music Moves Mountains Foundation. The album is a tasteful mix of acoustic and electric covers of Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, and Ray Charles/Hoagy Carmichael, and features two originals by Devin as well as a bonus demo of a new song.
These are 10 songs that showcase Devin's immense talents and range. The album was mixed and mastered by Devin as well.

Guests on the album include some of Austin’s most esteemed musicians: Chris Maresh, Nico Leophonte, Paul Deemer, Collin Shook, and members of Blue Mist, a local, legendary band consisting of alumni from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

In 2019, The Music Moves Mountains Foundation teamed up with Devin and began to raise funds to support his music development via the All Abilities Rock program. Devin gained the attention of famed producer Lou Adler, Carole King, and James Taylor for his cover of "You've Got a Friend" for the MMMF.

The Music Moves Mountains Foundation is a perpetual series of projects, programs, and services utilizing the scientifically proven powers of music to change and improve the quality of lives.
